How to write good clipboard code?

I read the clipboard tutorial and used the example code,
but that code doesn't take into account that many
applications use the 'primary' X windows clipboard.

Doing what the tutorials says is the 'ideal' way of
dealing with a clipboard is NOT ideal.

Does anyone have practical clipboard example code for me,
so that I can copy/paste (text) between any application,
and not just applications that use Gtk::Clipboard?
