Hmm.. I tried both suggestions, still takes a long time.. probably because, as Paul mentions, all the templating.  Oh well, hopefully it won't be so bad once I stop editing 'mainwindow.cc' and the entire thing doesn't need to recompile.

You can give a try to precompiled headers. On http://tottinge.blogsome.com/2007/05/07/g-precompiled-headers/ the author brings an example of speed improvement in his project.
