if you truly need high resolution timing for a periodic (or
semi-periodic) process, then you should *not* integrate this into your
main GUI event loop. there is no upper bound on how long GUI event
handling code could delay handling the timer.
if it matters that much, you should use a separate thread to deal with
the high resolution timer.
