Problem with Custom Widget Example

Hello,

i tried to play a little with the custom widget example.
When removing the modify_background call the widget turns totally black, is there a way to prevent this so i uses the standard background?
Would it be better to derive from DrawingArea, if i only want to draw some lines and catch mouse click events?
