Icon themes

Hello,

I am interested in using pre-existing icons beyond GTK stock, such as
those in Abiword (for example the icon for bullet points) or another
GNOME application.  On a system with such an application installed, are
these icons made available systemwide through some icon theme interface?
Is it simple to access such icons from such themes using gtkmm, or is
this a GNOME-specific operation?
