Setting the background colour

I have a widget that is derived from Gtk::Table.
Is it possible to make the background of the table (between the 
subwidgets) to take the background from "base[NORMAL]" in the gtkrc-2.0 
file.
I would like this table to look like lists and collections (f.ex. the 
icon view in Nautilus or the friends list in Gaim), regardless of the 
theme currently in use.
Is this possible?
