Hmm, I need some clue about what line of demos/primitives.cc is causing t=
his. If
the compiler won't say then you could comment out lines to discover it.

The compilation error says the the error happened in the Features::Featur=
es()
constructor, but does not say what line. Line 24 is just the the first li=
ne, and
there are no obvious member variables that would cause this. Commenting o=
ut
lines would probably give clues.

0.17.2. As I said this behaviour was added in 0.17.
Here is a pkgconfig commit in question:

Old behaviour for linking against static libs only.

Sorry, perhaps quote from ChangeLog explains things even better:

* main.c (main): Only recurse if we want a static library list or
	if this architecture doesn't support inter-library dependencies.
	This will probably expose bugs for libraries which declare
	dependencies in their .pc files but don't actually link against
	each other.
