I've worked on the exact same issue in Guikachu, and I had to do a manual 
selection-blocking to achieve exactly what you describe. You can find the 
code in GNOEM CVS, module guikachu, tag guikachu-gnome-2-branch, file 
src/form-win-widgettree.cc.
