No, I can't see why anybody would want to make all of their buttons (or
other child widgets) bigger or smaller than buttons on the rest of the
system.

You might want to use libgnomecanvas if you are talking about scaling
graphics or diagrams, or you might want to do something with GtkTextView if
you are talking about a limited area of text.
