Hi there!
Thanks for your interest.I'm using the compiler that SuSE defaults to.
g++ --version reports "g++ (GCC) 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux)"

Should I revert to an earlier version? I certainly hope not, as SuSE 8.2
comes with no other (there's no 2.95), and I don't really like the idea
of building and configuring older compiler in order to try gtkmm.

I would have thought, however, that whatever gnome2 apps that come with
SuSE have been compiled with this compiler ... no idea how many of these
do use c++, though.
