Murray,
I read your reply. Searching RedHat 8.0 packages list I didn't see
gtkmm2/gnomemm2 included. For whatever reason RedHat decided not to
include libraries in their distribution. Sounds like the spec files are
not in tarballs either. If I am a user of a gtkmm2-based application, I
should be able to get RPMs both for the application and for the
libraries it depends upon. Ultimately, I would like to have RPMs for the
libraries on my distro's CD. If not, they should be on rpmfind.net or on
project's home page. If not, then I should be able to download a tarball
and make a package out of them with % rmp -bp ... . What I don't want to
do is to download tarballs, compile, and install them to /usr/local. I
have no problems with doing it myself, but I don't want a casual user to
have a development system installed and learn how to build libraries.
Like with any other application, if it is hard to install, no one is
going to even try it.
I think gtkmm/gnomemm is very fine wrapper that should be used more by
the open source projects. However, the only way we can get more
developers if it would be no-brainer to install it with distro's native
packaging system.
