Paul Davis did in fact a quite good job telling me - assuming we only
look at my second mail in which I stated my question more precisely.

My first mail was probably not very precise - yet IMHO I said quite clearly that special circumstances are not important, although I only mentioned two of them. And the method of drawing is also there: I wrote "draw pixels" - of course a copying operation would also end up in being drawn pixel-by-pixel, but one wouldn't say so explicitly then, I guess.
