There are subsribers, but there's not much activity on the list, often
about a dozen posts per month.

Did you try using glFlush() instead? glFinish() might be OK with
software rendering, but for hardware rendering glFinish() should be
avoided. It will waste GPU time due to the long graphics hardware pipeline.
