Hi,
We have a plugin for firefox that does just this.
The currently released version runs in a separate process and
uses plugins and xplug to render into the window. This has not worked
well and so I am currently creating a simpler version with much of that
part stripped out.

Most of the source is in the subversion repository at
https://svn.physiomeproject.org/svn/cmiss/
It is not a good template for starting a new project however as the
opengl is buried inside of the embedded cmgui program which as a finite
element visualisation program is kind of big and has been developed over
several decades.
Shane.
