Some layout work would indeed be nice.  Patches welcome.  It should be
fairly easy with Pango markup and Gtk3::TextBuffer::insert_markup.

Yes, I haven't been able to think of a solution for this.  Maybe it
would be easiest if Gtk3 only had overrides that still allow the
original calling semantics.
