Hmm, I tried this:

  my ($x, $y, $width, $height) = $gtk_entry->get_parent_window->get_geometry;

but that gives me the geometry of the toplevel window which contains the
widget. This is the absolute reference I would have to add all the 
relative "size-allocate" positions from all parent widgets to, but I 
hoped there would be an easier solution ;)
