My gut reaction is that this is a side-effect of the fact that libglade 
creates the widgets once, the first time you ask for them from a 
gladexml object.  The menu is being destroyed after you use it, so it's 
not there anymore.

In general, the options are a) hide the window rather than destroy it, 
or b) rebuild the relevant ui from xml every time you need to show that 
window.

That said, i'm just talking off the top of my head, and have done no 
experimentation to verify this.
