setting widget color

I need to set a label's color (fg, bg, either way) on the fly, do
different colors depending on state.  

I know it needs to be in an event box, but I haven't even gotten that
far.

I'm guessing the easiest is to create a few different styles, then
assign style to the widget on the fly.  This is where I'm stuck.

Can someone point me to code that shows how to do this?  All the archive
examples seem to be specific to Gtk-perl, not Gtk2-perl.
