Trouble attaching signal to items in a submenu

Hi all,

I've been working on a simple RSS reader that will use an icon/menu in 
the tray to display the results. Everything is progressing smooth, 
except for attaching signals to items inside a submenu. If I put the 
items in the main menu, the signals attach fine, but if I put the items 
in a submenu, the signals no longer work.

I am especially confused because the items display fine, but the signals 
dont' work.

Here is the full code that I am working with, the subroutine dealing 
with generating the menu is at the bottom, "menu_update_contents".

I have been banging my head against my desk trying to figure out a 
better way for a few days now. Maybe there is a better approach to 
creating "dynamic" menu's that I could use?
