Interesting. It appears that my assumption that "." always comes first
when reading a directory's content doesn't hold.

That sounds like the scratch directory (Gnome2-VFS-1.002/tmp) already
exists from a previous test run and contains abandoned files. This can
happen if the test suite dies and doesn't clean up properly. Removing
Gnome2-VFS-1.002/tmp should (hopefully) fix it.
