There are several existing applets already, using
Gtk2::TrayIcon (available from sourceforge and i think from CPAN, but
not part of the bindings release set), e.g., YARSSR:
http://yarssr.sourceforge.net/
A tray icon isn't quite the same thing. I was thinking of something more like a
sticky-note app or resource monitoring.
There are bindings for libpanelapplet in CVS, as Gnome2::PanelApplet,
but last i recall there was some minor bug in them that kept them from
working. Just now i went through to compile them and possibly put a
tarball up on sourceforge, and found what i think is a pretty
interesting bug, so we'll see how that pans out.
I'll be interested to see this. I could write my app using Gtk2::TrayIcon, but
that limits where on the panel it can be placed.
