I've just started playing with GTK and some of the example code uses
Gtk2->init(\ ARGV);

you've either fetched a really old gtk2-perl (<0.20) or you've found
buggy examples. where was the example code?
The example was:
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gtk2-perl/gtk2-perl/tutorial- examples/progressbar.pl

that's from the old stuff. the current incarnation of gtk2-perl is called gtk2-perl-xs in cvs.

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/gtk2-perl/gtk2-perl-xs/

or

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous cvs sourceforge net:/cvsroot/gtk2-perl co gtk2-perl-xs
