For splash screen code, look at pronto - http://muhri.net/pronto
To display a jpg or a png or gif, you need to use GdkPixbuf (bindings come with
gtk-perl) or gdk_Imlib (bindings also come with gtk-perl) and they have
appropriate samples also, or you can use the new Imlib2 API, perl bindings for
that at muhri.net too.
