All of those ftp retrievals work for me, e.g.:
$ Argus:/Users/john> curl --continue-at - -L ftp://sourceware.org/pub/libffi/libffi-3.2.1.tar.gz -o 
~/Development/gtk-sources/libffi-3.2.1.tar.gz
  % Total    % Received % Xferd  Average Speed   Time    Time     Time  Current

It would seem that you've broken curl somehow so it won't retrieve with ftp.

BTW, the official http URI for XOrg is https://www.x.org/archive/individual/util/util-macros-1.19.1.tar.bz2, 
but ftp://ftp.freedesktop.org is still up-and-running.
