Beyond suggesting that you add shared-mime-info to your build, I don't know. Try asking on one of the GLib lists.

Sorry, that was a brain fade, I should have said gtk lists. You want either http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gtk-app-devel-list or http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gtk-list.
