how can I let application emit "configure event" signal?

Hi list,
I know when I change the widget's size,it will emit the
"configure_event",so the function "gtk_widget_set_size_request()"could
work.
But I'd like to know is there anything else could do this too?
I mean if GTK could send messages to a thread's message queue like in
Windows programming?
And if so,is there any "message" could let application emit the signal
like "configure_event"?
