Hope it works out for you. Xfbdev/kdrive definitely seems like the
best option. Hope you can make it work. In the long run, the DirectFB
route is a dead-end.

I'm thinking you could use their configure string and get it built for
your embedded device pretty easily. I believe you have to also build
X11 client libs (xcb and gtk?). All in all, should be very doable and
ought to be fairly compact.
