gtk_tree_view_column_pack_top ?

Hello Gtk, list,
i just learned how to use gtk_tree_view_column_pack_start (actually,
Gtk.TreeViewColumn.pack_start, as i use vala;) to add multiple cell
renderers in a column.
but it only does it horizontally...
can we tell gtk_tree_view_column_pack_start to "count" vertically ?
i assume if this was trivial, it were already implemented ?
has this been discussed before ? outcome ?

ps. yes, i use multiline markup atm. and a tip on how to do ellipsize on
that, would probably be an usable workaround...
