gtk+ compilation problems on RHEL 5.3

Hi,

I'm new to this list; so my apologies if I missed something in the
archives...

I am having problems compiling gtk+-2.14.7 on my Red Had Enterprise
Linux v5.3 system. I installed all of the "prerequisites" that I came
across. Specifically:

   glib-2.18.4
   cairo-1.8.6
   pixman-0.14.0
   libpng-1.2.35
   fontconfig-2.6.0
   freetype-2.3.9
   pango-1.20.5
   atk-1.26.0
   tiff-3.8.2
   jpegsrc.v6b

But perhaps I have an old version of libX11 and libXext. The
'configure --without-libjasper' command exited thusly:

------------------------------ Delimiter BEGIN --------------------------------
(snip)
checking for XOpenDisplay... no
configure: error: *** libX11 not found. Check 'config.log' for more details.
------------------------------- Delimiter END ---------------------------------

After looking in config.log, five separate checks failed. But
apparently only the check for XOpenDisplay was fatal.

Anyway, in /usr/lib I find the following:

------------------------------ Delimiter BEGIN --------------------------------
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   15 Mar 24 21:20 /usr/lib/libX11.so -> libX11.so.6.2.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   15 Mar 24 15:44 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 -> libX11.so.6.2.0
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.1M Jan 14 2008 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6.2.0
------------------------------- Delimiter END ---------------------------------

Is there information available which specifies which revisions of
libraries are required for gtk+ ? And perhaps where one can download
the sources?

On a similar note, I installed jasper-1.900.1 as well, but when I run
'configure', it bombs thusly:

------------------------------ Delimiter BEGIN --------------------------------
(snip)
checking for jas_init in -ljasper... no
configure: error:
*** Checks for JPEG2000 loader failed. You can build without it by passing
*** --without-libjasper to configure
------------------------------- Delimiter END ---------------------------------

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
