I didn't modify anything. This an excerpt from 'cairo' 'configure' screen
output:

"
checking for cairo's PostScript surface backend feature...
checking whether cairo's PostScript surface backend feature could be enabled... yes
checking for gs... gs
checking for LIBSPECTRE... no
no
checking for cairo's PDF surface backend feature...
checking whether cairo's PDF surface backend feature could be enabled... yes
checking for POPPLER... no
no
configure: WARNING: PDF backend will not be tested since poppler >= 0.9.2 is not available
".

The command line simply was:

./configure --prefix=/mnt/sdb8/sergei/AFSWD_debug/install/cairo-1.8.6
.

Regards,
  Sergei.
