You can do the "open" with
http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/stable/glib-IO-Channels.html#g-io-channel-new-file
and you can do that async with the
http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/stable/glib-IO-Channels.html#g-io-channel-set-flags
as Chris mentioned.
