It is not true that wchar_t is derided on Unix/POSIX platforms; after
all, POSIX *defines* internationalization in terms of wchar_t.  It's
just that wide strings defined as arrays of wchar_t, and terminated by
(wchar_t) 0, are not used as extensively as under some other platforms.
