There are many widgets out there, not part of the base Gtk+ libs.

CooCanvas is the best replacement for the limited Gnome2::Canvas.

an oscilloscope type widget.

Those widgets help avoid the problems with the basic
drawingarea. Get them and run the demos and you will see.
