Yeti, Thanks for the all the help. It's compiled now.
For anyone else compiling glib per the minimo howto [0], I ended up building
glib-2.2.3 for the x86 platform under knoppix 4. Installing glib-2.2.3 under
knopppix puts the needed glib binaries under /usr/local/bin.
I moved the stock knoppix glib utilities from /usr/bin to /tmp just to be
safe, and then added /usr/local/bin to the front of PATH= in build-gtk2.sh.
I deleted the glib-2.2.3 and glib-2.2.3-build directories and restarted
build-gtk2.sh and it worked.
stock knoppix glib-config will still be needed as that doesn't seem to have
been built with the 2.2.3 x86 compile.
