I'd take a look at the source code for the gaim system tray icon plugin.
(gaim.sf.net).
I know that QT has a built-in class for doing a tray icon in a system-
independent fashion (windows, mac, linux). I don't know if such an API
exists in GTK yet. I know that the GAIM plugin I have mentioned does
have specific code for X11 and Win32.
