Moving right along - I was able to get past the error after adding
/opt/gnome/bin to the PATH. Make continues further now and stops at this
error. 

a(Xfixes.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against FixesExtensionInfo' can not be
used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
/usr/X11R6/lib64/libXfixes.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I have tried to run the command 
./configure --with-fPIC 
but no luck yet. It stops at the same error
