I reported this same bug on this list last November for gtk+-2.8.6. I then
re-encountered it for 2.8.11 and filed this bug report:

My solution is not the proper one (editing the auto-generated configure
script), but it did work. The proper solution *may* be as simple as
running autoconf and friends. So far the status of the bug is
"unconfirmed". You may wish to elevate this bug by adding an additional
comment to the bug report
