coloring vbox/scrolled window

Hi all,
 witha  few of of VBOX scrolled window etc. Here is the containment.

vbox1 > scl > vbox2 > button.

I want to make the background area of button to be area. That is the
remaining uncovered part of scl/vbox2 should be in read. I tried to
set the BG/FG  color for scl/vbox2 it didn't work.

Please help me
