attaching callback to a GtkClist entry...

Is this possible?  I have a multi-paned view where I would like to update
some text labels based on which GtkClist entry has focus.  I am currently
accomplishing this through a gtk::timeout_add that runs every 50
milliseconds (I can increase this time but then the view is not as
responsive). This is causing a memory leak in my app at approx. 4k every few
seconds.  I would like to do away with this method if possible.
