use of gtk_label_set_max_width_chars()

Hi all,

Can someone explain which is the real  difference between
gtk_label_set_max_width_chars() and gtk_label_set_width_chars().

Tha second one work as I expect, but the first one doesn't reduce the
space required for the label, so I was wondering how it work.
