'gcc -dumpspecs' and look at the *invoke_as section. Keep in mind that if it has something like this: *invoke_as: %{!S:-o %|.s | as %(asm_options) %|.s %A } that will invoke 'as' as found via $PATH - so make sure it finds the one you intended it to find.
