Free some space ? ;)
Well, if you add this to your ~/.rpmmacros
%{_global_cflags}     -O2 
%{_optflags}          %{__global_cflags} -march=i386 -mcpu=i686

It should take much less space compiling it(no debugging symbols). 
I run those srpms on RH8,so it should work on RH9 I guess.
