Finally I got it to work following this link
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-app-devel-list/2003-November/msg00051.html
After running I moved all *.la files from
/usr/local/lib and /usr/lib into a separate directory. Then I replaced
/usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la
/usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.la
/usr/lib/libglib-2.0.la
in the dependency_libs line of the file libgtk-x11-2.0.la by
/usr/local/lib/libgobject-2.0.la
/usr/local/lib/libgmodule-2.0.la
/usr/local/lib/libglib-2.0.la . Then I ran make again that indicated that a
*.la file was missing and I checked wether it
contained /usr/lib/libgobject-2.0.la
/usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.la
/usr/lib/libglib-2.0.la
in the dependency_libs line and replaced it by the above
mentioned /usr/local/lib/... and copied it back to the original location.
(I only needed to do that for the libatk-1.0.la file)
After that I could run make and make install without encountering any errors.
