I had the same problems on a Solaris 9 machine. I eventually got gtk
to compile but never got it to run - got a runtime error when running
the gtk test program about needing to configure fonts. I decided to
stick with gtk 2.2.x for now and hope that maybe newer versions of
Solaris will come with everything I need.

I think there are the files I downloaded and compiled but don't
remember the order:

render-0.8.tar.gz
xrender-0.8.3.tar.gz
fontconfig-2.2.2.tar.gz
xft-2.1.2.tar.gz
pkgconfig-0.15.0.tar.gz

and then the usual glib, pango, atk, gtk.

If you get it working, please let me know.

Dave
