Russell,
pkg-config returns 2.2.1 (as expected) but glib 2.4.2. I updated pkg-config
(compiled the source pkgconfig-0.15.0) and that produced the same result.
The rpm install for glib 2.4.2 still fails with
unlocatable package glib2 = 2.2.1 required by glib2-devel (I'm running rpm
from Nautilus GUI).
It must be possible to install jolly gimp on a standard RedHat 9
installation. What is going on here?
Cheers
Andreas

Check that pkg-config returns the right results:
pkg-config --modversion glib-2.0
