help needed in installing the latest gtk,glib and pango packages

i need help regarding upgrading the existing libraries
of glib, gtk and pango in red hat linux ver 9. Ive
followed the instructions in the INSTALL readme
included in each package and this way GLIB gets
configured and made but GTK and PANGO cannot be
upgraded and the error message given states that
upgraded glib library cannot be found?. I am new to
the Linux environment and i am working on fonts. I
think its because of some dependency i am not
fulfilling or because of the directory in which i am
installing. Ive downloaded GTK 2.4.0, GLIB 2.4.0 and
pango 1.4.0
detailed help would be most appreciated.
