GtkCellRenderer "cell-background" vs. "background"

(I tried searching the GTK FAQ before posting but it's empty.  Googling
didn't turn up anything useful either.)

I see a "cell-background" property in GtkCellRenderer and a "background"
property in its GtkCellRendererText subclass.  What's the distinction?
