TreeView Selections - Multiple signals

Hi,
  Whenever I select anything for the first time in a treeview (either by
clicking on it or using gtk_tree_selection_select_iter, the changed signal
is always called twice - once for the first item in the treeview and then
again for the item I wanted selected. How do I stop the first of these?
