can i hide/show rows of Gtk2 Treeviews?

i am just collecting my first experiences with the new gtk2
treeviews and came across this question.
i want to have a filter, where i can hide some rows of a treeview.
can i hide them, or do i really have to remove them?
with columns this seems to be very easy...
