compiling problems

i am trying to compile atk 1.2.4, glib 2.2.3, pango 1.2.4 and gtk 2.2.2.

glib 2.2.3 works fine. but all the others are fine for ./configure

when i try to 'make' then comes the problem.
i get the following message

[root localhost gtk+-2.2.2]# make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found.  Stop.
[root localhost gtk+-2.2.2]# make install
make: Nothing to be done for `install'.

what should i do?
